Kit Kat - Purple sweet potato

Sorry that I haven't been updating this blog for almost a month, I've been very busy and went on a bit of a hiatus. I suppose I should have posted a notice to you guys before I left, ne? Once again, sorry for not letting you guys know that I had to take some time away from updating.
Anyway, I'm back now so hopefully I can update more regularly from now on.
And what better way to revive this blog than going back to one of my all-time favorite sweets; Kit Kat!And yes, it's another review on a Japanese KK flavor (most of my KK reviews are of Japanese KK anyway).

Roasted purple sweet potato is a popular light snack in Japan, and any purple sweet potato confectionery is always a sure hit, and it certainly is the case with this purple sweet potato KK!

Kit Kat - Hojicha

Posted by Linda on 19. 2011 4 comments 0 trackback
Hojicha is a popular roasted type of tea in Japan, it's different to Matcha and other types of Japanese green teas, in the sense that Hojicha is roasted green tea leaves over charcoal on a very high temperature until the leaves turn reddish-brown. Once brewed, Hojicha has a reddish-brown colour, it's less bitter than green tea due to the loss of catechin content during the roasting process. But it has a very pleasant taste and aroma, and Hojicha was the inspiration for this new limited edition and VERY RARE regional flavor of Kit Kat!
kitkat-hojicha.jpg kitkat-hojicha2.jpg kitkat-hojicha3.jpg
the classic wafers were coated by a thick layer of pleasant brown chocolate infused with a generous and very accurate amount of Hojicha flavor, with more sweet Hojicha flavor choc between the wafers. The choc coating was melt in your mouth, highly recommended! This has just been added to my list of favorite KK flavors!

My rating (overall):

I was lucky to have found this particular flavor of KK, it's VERY RARE in Japan, only available in a small region in Japan! And it's only available for order online @ NapaJapan!
http://www.napajapan.com/Product.asp?product=704
it is quite expensive, US$2.49 for just 1 mini bar of this, but considering just how rare this particular KK is, I think the price is quite reasonable...even if you are put off by the price, for me, it was an amazing experience! And I think it's well worth a try at least! I will definitely order this flavor again! But of course not frequently because of the price, however I will order it again because of how much I loved the taste

Kit Kat - Kokutou & Kinako and dark chocolate

Posted by Linda on 26. 2010 2 comments 0 trackback
2 more Japanese Kit Kat flavors to review, today I will blog about the Kokutou & Kinako flavor & dark...firstly, the dark:
kitkat-dark.jpg
it's basically just dark chocolate KK, the simple slightly bitter rich dark choc coating the crispy wafers, and since I LOVE dark choc, it really couldn't get any better than this for me!
My rating (overall):

now the Kokutou & Kinako flavor:
kitkat-kinako.jpg kitkat-kinako2.jpg
this one is definitely a more complex flavor, the chocolate coating is enriched with kokutou (brown sugar) flavor, with sweet kinako (soy bean) powder flavor choc between the wafers, so you get 2 different flavors in this one, but they both blend in quite well together. The kinako choc between the wafers had a somewhat peanut taste...though I could barely taste the kinako because the flavor from the kokutou choc coating was so overpowering anything else, to the extent that mostly all I could taste was brown sugar kokutou...with barely tastes of choc & kinako. This is my only tiny complaint about this KK, I felt the kokutou flavor was just a bit too strong...I would've enjoyed it more if the kokutou flavor wasn't so overpowering, so to bring out more of the kinako flavor...oh well.
But overall, this was yet another interesting KK experience for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed savoring it.

Kit Kat - Winter strawberry

Posted by Linda on 11. 2010 0 comments 0 trackback
Japan has already produced a strawberry flavor kit kat, and here's another kind they made using strawberries specifically grown in winter.
winterstrawberryKK.jpg winterstrawberryKK2.jpg
unlike the regular strawberry flavored kit kats which were coated with strawberry flavored white chocolate, this one was coated with milk choc instead (obviously)...slightly reducing the full strawberry flavor. The star of this particular KK for me, was the strawberry cream between the wafers, which brought out most if not all of the lovely strawberry flavor.

Up till now, I am still unable to make out the difference between regular strawberries & strawberries grown in winter...nor can I differentiate between the tastes of the 2. So I am not sure exactly what the difference is between this KK and the regular strawberry KK...they all have the same flavor to me...the only difference I was able to taste was the use of milk choc instead of the regular white choc.

Overall, this was a really nice KK with a lovely flavor of strawberry...although there's really nothing special about this one, as it virtually has the same strawberry taste as the regular strawberry kit kat (to me anyway).

Kit Kat chunky - Uji Matcha

My fourth order with NapaJapan has just arrived at my doorstep a few hours ago, yatta!
So, my first goodie from my 4th order I'll review about is this chunky Kit Kat bar, another invention from Kit Kat Japan! I love drinking maccha (green tea), and any maccha flavored confectioneries & snacks! So I was really delighted to see this Uji maccha flavored chunky KK available, assuming it will have a very strong flavor of my fave tea, I didn't hesitate to order this:
kitkatbar-maccha.jpg kitkatbar-maccha2.jpg
frankly...I was just slightly disappointed with this one...despite the thick coating of green maccha flavored chocolate surrounding the entire bar, and more maccha flavored icing between the wafers, the full flavor of maccha however, just wasn't as strong as I had anticipated...I felt the flavor of the white choc had slightly overpowered the rather subtle taste of the maccha, so that was a bit of a let-down for me.
Overall, it wasn't "bad", I still enjoyed munching on it and I had no troubles consuming the entire bar in under 2 minutesjust that I would've loved it much more if the full maccha flavor had been stronger.

My rating (overall):

I also took some points off for the price; US$3.99 for each bar, I felt the price was a bit too high for the bar. Over here in Australia, we can buy a chunky sized chocolate bar for about half that price. Then again, Japanese Kit Kats are just so rare to find outside Japan, so I wouldn't mind spending some extra money on these Japanese sweets once in a while

Kit Kat - Aloe Yogurt

here's another interesting new flavor of KK from Japan; Aloe yogurt:
aloekitkat.jpg aloekitkat2.jpg
a joint venture with TBC (a Japanese cosmetics company), I was intrigued by this one since I've never tasted Aloe yogurt so I didn't know how it tastes like prior to trying these KKs. But if the taste of these Aloe yogurt KK is anything to go by, let's just say that I'm really eager to give Aloe yogurt a try next time! If I can find it online of course, since I very much doubt I'll be able to find Aloe yogurt here in Australia.
Ok, so the coating was obviously white choc, but it contained a decent amount of aloe flavor & I could just taste what I thought was yogurt flavor, there was more Aloe yogurt flavored cream between the wafers.
The full flavor was just incredible, I was pleasantly surprised by this one, the taste was very unique & refreshing. I will definitely be ordering more of these!
These cost slightly more than the regular price...normally it costs US$1.99 for 2 mini KK bars, or US$7.99 for a whole bag of 13-14 mini bars at NapaJapan, but special flavors like this one costs US$2.29 for 2 mini bars, which isn't a big increase, and trust me, $2.29 for 2 mini bars of this particular KK is well worth it!

Kit Kat - Milk coffee

One of my favorite all-time KK flavors, this is Milk coffee from KK Japan!
Picture-041.jpg Picture-041b.jpg
I love the balance of flavor, from the coffee chocolate coating, to the coffee cream between the biscuit wafers. The balance of flavor of the milk coffee & the choc was just perfect for me, the milk coffee flavor wasn't too subtle, nor was it too strong. Just perfect!

Kit Kat - Framboise

Posted by Linda on 30. 2010 0 comments 0 trackback
I bought this KK flavor for my recent second order with NapaJapan, I heard this is one of the most popular Japanese KK flavors & I've read a lot of rave reviews about it in other food blogs, so I was eager to give this a try myself.
Although frankly, there was a slight hesitation at first because of my previous experience with the Raspberry & Passionfruit KK, which I did not like very much...
framboiseKK.jpg
however, with my first bite, I immediately took a liking to it! There was a good balance of flavor with the chocolate & raspberry cream, which was nice. For me, this flavor is a great improvement from the raspberry & passionfruit KK.
What I also like about it is the packaging, the design on the box is very pretty & attractive (then again, most Japanese confectionery packaging are!), and I like the rougher texture of the box too, it's very different to the usual smooth Japanese KK boxes.
Overall, I intend on getting this flavor again the next time I order Japanese KKs!

Kit Kat - Custard pudding

Posted by Linda on 28. 2010 0 comments 0 trackback
I LOVE custard pudding, I LOVE kit kats, so this was like a dream come true for me when I saw this flavor!
Picture-036.jpg
but...frankly, I was rather disappointed, the custard pudding flavor was a bit too subtle for me, that the white choc sort of overpowered it.
But overall, it wasn't a "bad" flavor, but I certainly expected more from it, the custard pudding flavor could've been stronger.

Kit Kat - Ginger Ale

Posted by Linda on 25. 2010 0 comments 0 trackback
I have to admit, I've never drank ginger ale before so I don't know how it tastes like, and I HATE ginger! That's basically the reason why I never tried the drink! But since I'm such a HUGE fan of Japanese kit kats, I was willing to give this a try:
gingeraleKK.jpg gingeraleKK2.jpg
I was so pleasantly surprised by this flavor! I love it! Absolutely love it!I could taste the ginger and refreshing soda flavor, it wasn't too heavy, which I love!
I gave my mum a try of this yummy flavor KK and she agrees with me & really liked it too...except she didn't quite like the aftertaste of the ginger flavor in her mouth, which I personally didn't mind at all.
And because of this flavor KK, I might just try drinking ginger ale next time!

I will definitely be getting more of this!
